How to Play Lightning Fast Classical Guitar

Blasting out lightning fast scales on the classical guitar is a very impressive feat. It sounds so good and really raises the emotional level of your playing. You really can increase your playing speed if you understand a few basic principles.

The first principle of speed on the classical guitar is the fact that whole pieces are not fast. Speed in compositions comes in bursts. This is the basic tenet of comparison. A piece played Largo might have Andante passages that are fast. But these Andante passages are slow if compared to a composition that is presto. So be aware that speed is not necessarily how many notes a second but more a factor of notes and phrases in comparison to each other.

Practice, Practice, Practice

You already know that practice is critical to speed. You have to practice your scales just for the practice, and you have to practice a wide variety of scales. Classical Guitar is like every other form of kinesthetic art; as you practice the motions you make will settle into deeper regions of your brain and your body will learn how to do it without you even thinking about it. With practice you will be able to blast out very fast scales that will amaze you.

Now, all of that sounds good but what about some practical advice on how to get faster?

This part is easy, and the single best thing you can do to improve your speed is to make a conscious attempt at finger crossing patterns with your right hand. This is usually the biggest challenge to playing speed. Practice, on a daily basis if possible, crossing string patterns.

What are string crossing patterns?

This is the way you pick across the six strings with your right hand. If you are playing a scale and you transition from string to string with the right hand you will use a pattern such as playing the first string with your index finger then playing the second string with your middle finger. On to the third string you are back to your index finger and for the fourth string again back to the middle finger.

Avoid the same crossing patterns and create new ones

As you become aware of your finger crossing you will see that you have very distinct patterns that you use. You should create and practice new patterns that are not comfortable for you. This truly will dramatically increase your speed. A good example of a new pattern you might try is to switch your starting finger. When practicing scales you probably start the first note with your right hand index finger. And as you progress through the scale you cross scales in the same pattern. You should try starting the scale with your middle finger. This will totally change the crossing pattern you use for playing the scale and once you get a bit of practice like this your speed will increase significantly. Vary this crossing pattern in as many ways as you can and make sure you also do double strikes where you cross using the same finger. Try playing using only two fingers and then try using only three fingers. These new approaches will create new crossing patterns for you.

To improve your playing speed on the classical guitar you have to practice and you have to bump yourself out of your normal routines of playing. But with some conscious effort you can significantly improve your speed.

The author has been playing the classical guitar for over 20 years and is still learning. For more interesting stuff about this beautiful instrument including mp3s of him playing:

Vaginal Itching - Just Itching To Itch

Vaginal itching - How many women have found them self in a situation where the urge to relieve an itch around their private parts becomes so unbearable that they had to leave the room to relieve the urge (scratch) so not to cause embarrassment to them self or that of others in their company. Remember ladies that trying to disguise the discomfort by tightening the legs to squeeze the life out of the vaginal itch is not the best approach to claim relief. If you attempt this course of action then there is a strong possibility that an onlooker may see you as doing the rumba, which is not really an acceptable image of yourself if standing in a bus queue.

An itchy vagina can become painful if the skin around the affected area is rubbed red raw through clawing. A tingling sensation and irritation of the skin around the vagina.(vulva) is how the condition is described Not only is vaginal itching annoying it tempts the patient to scratch with aggression. Hygiene is profound; the hands should be cleaned before scratching and after. Dirty finger nails that tear the skin cause infection.

Causes behind vaginal itching are varied but most common known are chemical irritants contained in certain products. Content based chemicals that come in contact with the skin which encourage irritation are detergents, fabric softeners, feminine sprays, ointments, douches, contraceptive foams or jellies.

One recognized symptom of vaginal yeast infection is a discharge - white in colour and curd-like texture. Known yeast infection causers are antibiotics, birth control tablets, menstruation, pregnancy and diabetes, even condom use and sexual intercourse. However use a condom when engaging in sex. A weak immune system can make you susceptible to infection.

Vaginitis means inflammation of the vagina, should you suffer from the disorder then cause can be blamed on the presence of an infection. Noticeable changes in your discharge i.e. smell and colour, burning feeling in the vagina, discomfort when urinating or during sex are all symptoms of vaginitis. A common cause is thrush infection (a fungus -candida albicans).

Stress can increase vaginal itching making you more prone to infection. A drop in estrogen causes thinning of the vaginal wall and less lubrication while going through the menopause. Vaginal itching can occur from one of the many named causes, however, determining which cause is important so the appropriate medication is prescribed. A rare reason for vaginal/vulva itch include: pin-worms, pin-worms more often than not are parasites more known to affect children.

Keep the genital area clean and dry. Use unscented soap when washing. Make sure smellies used to bathe in (bubble bath) contain no irritants. Avoid perfumed feminine sprays and douches unless packaging states otherwise.

Cotton knickers are safer to wear than panties made from synthetic materials. Cleanse your self by wiping from front to back after using the toilet (vagina to anus).

It is easier said than done but do try to avoid scratching, scratching can aggravate. Even more difficult for some is to ration the passion, abstain from sexual encounters until the symptoms disappear. Yeast infections are not directed towards being sexually transmitted. The yeast infection is also known to affect men following sexual contact causing itching and redness.

Despite what you believe may be the right medication bought from the chemist to treat you`re infection, it is best to consult a doctor first. Seek medical advice if you notice signs of vaginal bleeding when not menstruating, swelling or detect a repulsive vaginal odor. A burning sensation when urinating or other urinary symptoms may be urinary tract infection. Antifungal drugs are normally prescribed for yeast infections.

Antibiotics in most cases are prescribed for bacterial vaginal infections and some sexually transmitted diseases, however, if protection is used it lessens the odds of catching an STD and also an unwanted pregnancy of which will definitely highlight the vagina for the next nine months.

Volunteering in Latin America - The Spanish Learning Opportunity

Past South Americas' exotic appeal and interesting cultural make up, Latin America offers a lot of opportunities for volunteer work and especially in teaching English. This South American region offers beautiful landscape and travel opportunities to places that are more heard of than seen. Volunteering in Latin America has increased in the recent past due to a failing economy, poverty, and lack of education and political and civil wars and strife. But the fact is that Latin American nations have a wealth of natural resources, but are still considered as developing countries by those in North America and Europe.

So if you are interested in overseas volunteer work then Latin America is a place to be. Some of the relatively developed countries in Latin America like Argentina and Costa Rica have significant number of people below the poverty line. Apart from this most of Latin American countries are not well versed with English, which is slowly becoming a global language. Volunteering in Latin America can vary from country to country and it can include from community development, health education, environmental work and even sports. As an individual, you can always choose the kind of overseas volunteer work you want to participate in and the duration that you want to work for.

Volunteering in Latin America includes the following types of work:

Conservation volunteerism: This is of prime importance especially because a large part of the Amazon rain forest has disappeared and with it has disappeared many habitats. You can choose volunteering work from different types of conservation projects that include preservation of endangered species of turtles in Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago; Wildlife rehabilitation centers in Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador and save forests and environmental projects in Brazil (mostly Amazon), Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala etc. You don't need to have any kind of degree in animal behavior, all you need is love for nature, animals and a will to make a difference and save the planet and its depleting natural resources.

Health Volunteerism: Volunteering in Latin America revolves a lot around health and related services because most of the countries there don't have the necessary infrastructure or skilled people that include, doctors, nurses and other medical practitioners. Lack of education also means that health problems are at a rise in the backward areas and smaller towns. You can get a lot of exposure through volunteer work in hospitals in Ecuador and Honduras.

Sports Volunteerism: Sports may seem to be the unlikely area for volunteer work. South America has a lot of sporting talent especially in soccer but there is no infrastructure, coaches or training schools that can hone the skills of the youngsters or teenagers who want to enter the professional sports arena. Soccer is like a religion in some countries like Brazil and Argentina, who have also made their mark on the World stage. El futbol is considered to be a way of life, so if you have ever coached any teams or played in any league games in Europe or other parts of the world then you can volunteer as a football/soccer coach.

Volunteer Community Development: Although South America presents a pretty picture that advertises the smiles, the sun, the sand, the giant palm trees, the beautiful and exotic wildlife, there is much work to be done in terms of community development. Latin America suffers from a disparity of wealth and there are many people who dream of a better life, more money so that they can provide the basic necessities to their children or parents. Volunteering in Latin America in Community development will involve many aspects like teaching English, developing projects that will benefit the society as a whole, helping old aged people and orphans, providing education to street kids and many more. It is all hard work but the end result is gratifying because you will be one of the few people to have made a difference.

Wedding Dance

Normally, we call it march in. I feel wedding can be a very special one when the wedding couple dances into the ballroom rather than the normal march in.

My cousin had his wedding and surprisingly, there was this segment when he danced with his bride.

The dance served as an entertainment for us too.

Soon after, other guests joined them and we had our first dance too. The aisle was packed with dancing couples.

Even my aunties and uncles who are already in their sixties joined in too.

Rather an amazing sight to see. One of the very few in Singapore's wedding indeed.

If you are planning your wedding and have a special piece of music for your all important first dance, you may want to sign up your very first wedding dance lesson in a dance studio.

Through a course of private lessons, the dance teacher may be able to customise the dance lesson for you.

As you know, we all have different calibre. For me, I'm sure I'm not a good dancer because I can't coordinate the dancing steps well.

However, it is always worth a try.

At the dance studio, the experienced teachers can choreograph an individual dance to fit your music perfectly.

There are different type of wedding dances:

1. traditional Waltz,

2. sexy Argentine Tango

3. passionate Rumba

Dancing isn't as easy as what it seemed. We all saw from television programs which show dancing competition and how graceful the dancers were.

They were dancing as one. They were moving their bodies as one.

However, do you know they may have learnt and practice for ten over years just to be able to qualify for the dancing contest?

But, wedding couples do not have so much time.

Whatever you do, if you are going to dance at your wedding, just enjoy yourself and I'm sure all the guests will feel very proud of how happy the wedding couple is!

The History of Ballroom Dancing

From tribal rituals, to the elite, carefully learned choreography, to High School education that actually involved learning and practicing ballroom dance, there is a deep historical meaning behind it. The historical significance of dancing is just as important as the art, architecture, and music of that era. Variations of classic historical ballroom dancing such as the Minuet, to the Polonaise, to the Quadrille, Pas de Gras, the Mazurka and many, many more are still very much alive in certain circles. From competitions to classes and pure dance-floor enjoyment, many people have kept many of these dances (these expressions of a specific eras historical flavor) alive.

When you study the history of ballroom dancing, you learn more about the social customs of certain time periods in the past. Most social dancing is not choreographed, and has been so for some time but it was not always that way. There are many dances created to be executed to particular music with precise movement and timing. In ballroom dancing you will have a leader who is, traditionally, the man and the follower who (as logically would follow) is the woman.

Physical contact between the upper body and the lower body of the dancers in position will dictate the pre-choreographed steps. The leader guides the follower into each coming movement gracefully as the music plays. The choreography provides room for each couple to move about freely as the dance requires, and sometimes partners will revolve around the room. They then end up dancing with and winding between other dancers, exactly as the routine is designed. Performing such tasks, however difficult, with grace, seemingly automatic movements, and without hesitation was a virtue for both men and women. It was common to introduce yourself or engage in conversation while executing the routine with perfect timing and without missing a step.

In some ways I like the individuality that some people put into their social dancing I have seen some people draw some serious attention to themselves in the club scene. However, at the same time I firmly believe that it is absolutely unfortunate for our era to have lost the opportunity to experience custom of choreographed, studied forms of partner dancing. But you can dig up the fun and relive the different art forms of eras past which are lost to most people in the here and now. Sometimes the exercise you get from ballroom dancing is a real incentive to keep yourself in shape. Fun is motivation. In addition to the exercise, you learn more about other people and places in time, you get to feel the flush of an antique, elite, and elegant art form.

Since the earliest times recorded in history there have been significant dances and / or dance rituals involving thousands upon thousands of countries at a time. This tradition carried on throughout the centuries, across the widening boundaries of time, and is as endless to us as music has been across the ages. Nonetheless, it has become more and more relaxed and unconventional as a social practice for people all over the world. For example: Early in the 20th century, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers set the example for widely popular ballroom dancing all over America. So it has not been that long, and in some places the heart of ballroom dancing of all different styles is collectively throbbing in the greatest condition of vitality.

Despite the fact that in certain places you can find people and events completely centered on the exciting art of ballroom dancing, there are also places where it is relatively unnoticed. With new fitness equipment, fitness programs, and other exercise fads such as Yoga or Pilates, ballroom dancing, it does not often occur to someone to consider ballroom dancing. Almost all doctors, specialists, and other professionals will recommend a cardiovascular workout as part of your regular exercise program. In all truth, nonetheless, ballroom dancing is an excellent possibility for an exercise program, one including a cardiovascular workout.

Simple Lighting Ideas For Your Wedding Reception

Music will get your guests to dance but good lighting will create the right atmosphere and mood. Many a time the issue of lighting at wedding receptions has not been taken seriously resulting in making the place look like some any other room without ambience and the glamour it ought to have. The lighting will be part of the DJs or the bandsmen equipment and in the search for entertainment, you would take the utmost care to obtain the service that has both modern and impressive lighting to make your guests get into the right mood at your reception.

Of great importance is the strobe light. It has a large beam and it is used to accentuate an appearance. For example, it can be used to make the couple the spotlight of the event as they do the first dance. They can also be used to create a romantic or classy look as different people take to the floor to dance.

The light must be both reliable and attractive. Though the use of disco balls may not be appropriate for such a grand occasion, you can have UV black lights or moving mirror. They both create a fantastic atmosphere.

Aside the dance, the lighting also provides the feeling with which people could associate the music with. As the music rolls, the DJ or lighting man selects the best colors and intensity to match it. It helps the guests to associate themselves with the event.

In the event that you bandsmen or your DJ does not have the ability to manage the lighting well, you can hire a special lighting man to undertake the task. The lighting man has the experience and technical competence to manage the lighting at the reception. He knows which light is best for each mood, for video coverage and for what activity.

Lighting is one important part of your reception. You cannot afford to lose sight of the role it plays in both your reception hall ambiance and in the mood of your guests.

Information on wedding planning and wedding vows is readily available. You can also easily get advice about wedding favors.

Musical Feuds

There are many famous instances of immortal musicians being insulted by other famous musicians.

Johann Sebastian Bach, like most musicians of the day, worked as a church musician. He was anything but docile, and was known to rankle easily.

He was once reproved for playing "strange harmonies" during a church service. Bach's answer was to play even stranger harmonies the next Sunday, and this from the greatest composer of religious music the world has ever seen, the composer of the St. Matthew Passion.

Still steaming, the elders complained again to Bach and added the insult that the music was at some points "too long."

The next Sunday, of course, the music was much too short.

Beethoven also had his feuds, especially in the early years when he was establishing himself as a great pianist.

A worthless popinjay named Steibelt had made it known that he thought Beethoven a terrible pianist, and in essence challenged Beethoven to a musical duel, a common occurrence in those days. Beethoven despised Steibelt, for he was in truth a talentless oaf that foolishly dared to challenge a great master.

At a party the next week, Beethoven heard Steibelt playing one of his own compositions, an insipid Trio for piano, violin and cello. It was the type of horrid, elaborately ornamented fluff that Beethoven reviled, but he watched calmly as Steibelt finished the piece and took his bows.

A hush fell over the crowd as Beethoven appeared out of the shadows and walked toward the piano. Everyone was aware of the grudge between Steibelt and Beethoven and the air was thick with apprehension.

Steibelt, startled by the angry look on the master's face, stepped away from the piano.

As Beethoven walked past the cello's music stand, he snidely grabbed the cello's sheet music.

Carefully showing the astounded crowd the page of sheet music, Beethoven sat at the piano and then put the music, upside down, onto the piano music stand.

As Steibelt and the hushed crowd watched, Beethoven plunked out the notes of the upside down cello part, forcefully jabbing with his pointed and angry index finger, not taking his eyes off Steibelt.

Then Ludwig began to improvise like a madman on Steibelt's upside down cello part theme. The crowd was carried away with Beethoven's angered showmanship.

And it was magnificent, one of those legendary Beethoven improvisations that have gone down in history, a passionate outpouring of ideas and bravura, until at last the piece was over with a furious ending and crash.

Curiously, Steibelt was never heard from again.

American Idol, probably the most watched show in the history of entertainment finally crowned it's winner David Cook at the Nokia Theatre in grand finale fit for a superstar. It was touching to see him get overcome by emotions after his last performance. Maybe reflecting on his long journey on American Idol was just too much for him and he was glad it was finally over.

There's no doubt both Davids are extremely talented. But I'd always been rooting for David Archuleta through out the season and I still believe he delivered. Cook is definitely a great singer but his performances I thought were a bit lackluster for a grand finale compared to Archuleta who delivered knock out after knock out which prompted Simon Cowel to declare him winner of round 1 and 2 of the 3 rounds. It's just as well though. At just 17 the boy is too young. He has a very powerful voice but most of the time he just didn't know what to say when asked questions. But hey! It was not a talking competition.

I think America was afraid to catapult him to teenage megastardom lest he meets the ogre that ate former teenage star's Britney Spears' brains. He's already a star by virtue of his big voice and immense talent but maybe having not won the title will give him a chance to cool off and complete his studies. The youngster had trouble even dealing with the possibility of being crowned American Idol Season 7. Throughout the show he looked mostly overwhelmed - like he would faint at any time. David Cook on the other hand is more mature at 25 years and is better placed to handle the pressures that are likely to come with is new job. I hope their careers will blossom like for some of the former winners of American Idol.

Speaking of former American Idol Winners, I was really shocked at the performance of one Fantasia Barrino on the show a few weeks ago. Talk of change of musical style! She was never my favorite even during her season but at least she had a sweet voice and actually used to actually sing! This time she landed onto the stage with blazing red hair, red lips and red nails and shouted herself hoarse. Whatever she's smoking she needs to stop. Even Simon Cowel was caught on camera gawking in obvious disbelief. Other past winners like Jordan Sparks and Kerry Underwood seem to be doing much better.

How to Download Music to PSP

Have you been pulling your hair out trying to download music to your Sony PSP?

I am going to give you my quick and easy recipe for putting your favorite music on your PSP. There are only a few steps and it is a cinch on you know how.

1. First off you need to get what they call a cd ripper and while you are at it I would definitely grab a psp video converter. A cd ripper lets you pull music (rip) of your cd's
that you have now. The psp video converter will let you rip and convert video files to watch on your PSP...so you can watch and listen to music videos and music, cool heh!

2. Load your cd and fire up your cd ripper select the song or songs you want to put on your PSP and hit the "extract and encode" to PSP.

3. If you already have music files on your pc then all you need to do is hit "add" from your cd ripper or psp video converter.

4. Make sure on all of the above you select the "PSP" format.

5. How to download or transfer your music to PSP? Just connect your PSP with your PC with the USB cable, and copy your mp3 file(s) into "H:PSPMUSIC" where H: would equal the drive of your PSP.

That's it. It is real simple to put music on your PSP!

Travis Sago is a computer technician and PSP enthusiast and fanatic. Don't have a good cd ripper or psp video converter? You can learn more about both at http://www.the-psp-pimp.com/pspvideoconverter.html

The Sales Carpenter

I remember moving my family to Argentina as Vice President of Sales for Latin America. I was in charge of managing five regional offices, Argentina of course being one of them.

In the companys ten year history of selling into Latin America it had never exceeded $14 million (M) in annual sales. The Argentina office itself had never produced more than $400 thousand (K) in sales. My task was to increase the sales locally in Argentina, but more importantly throughout Latin America.

I remember sitting in my office one day, looking out the window and wondering, How the heck am I going to grow this business with problems in Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico and other hot spots? How can I grow this business beyond $14M when no one in the past has been able to do so? Forget the movie Sleepless in Seattle, I was Sleepless in Argentina, trying to map out a strategy. How would I make sales happen?!

A confession to you the reader: I was scared! Please dont tell anyone!

One day while on the phone with a customer, I heard loud noises from across my office building. After getting off the phone, I opened the window and looked at the shorter building next door. On the rooftop, I saw several men using a scrapping machine to rip apart the flat roof the size of two tennis courts. This noise went on for days.

Then one day I noticed the silence. I looked outside and discovered that the men had finishing stripping the rooftop and were now laying small ceramic tiles. Given the size of the roof I remember thinking, Thats going to take them a very long time.

A few days later to my surprise and amazement I looked outside and saw that they were three-quarters of the way complete. Amazing! How were they able to lay so many small tiles so quickly?

Satori, a moment of enlightenment.

At that very moment, a new mindset was born for building sales. Instead of focusing in on the enormous task of increasing sales for the entire region (the whole roof), I would focus on building the companys sales slowly (one ceramic tile or sales office at a time).

It was this paradigm shift, this Latin American version of eating an elephant one-bite-at-a-time that helped me maintain the patience and sanity needed to grow the business. I considered each country in Latin America a tile. I set out to make sure that each tile I laid was positioned correctly in the marketplace. The result? First year, we hit $14.3M. Second year $45M. By the end of the third year, the regions annual sales had grown to $98M. The Argentina office itself went from $400K in sales to $5M.

Success, in sales and in life, starts when you break things up into smaller pieces; you begin to feel a sense of control. And as I began to take action, I began to feel a sense of momentum. Control and momentum became my engine for success. And every time I felt overwhelmed or anxious, I thought to myself, Victor, lets just lay one tile at a time.

Confucius said, It is not a matter of how fast or slow, but simply a matter of you moving. I learned that progress or success never happens overnight, but over timeone tile at time. I learned how to become a sales carpintero (carpenter who builds things).

Dancing Motivation In The New Year

It is a new calendar year, but the dancing year is not yet halfway underway. The mid-year lag sets in. If you are a performing dancer, the excitement of the Nutcracker is passed, but the anticipation of recital season is not yet upon you. So how does one stay motivated and even excited about dancing with this mid-year lull?

Here are a few tips:

- Start asking questions about the recital and spring performance. Find ways to build your anticipation early in the year. Consider creating a collage with the performance theme to put in your room.

- Try a new bun style- add a scarf or patterned ribbon (if your teacher will let you) to spruce up your style. A yard of ribbon is usually around $1, and you can cut enough sections to share with your friends!

- Set a goal to achieve in 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months. It might be completing choreography to your favorite song, mastering a double or triple pirouette, or improving your splits.

- Start saving up some money for a new leotard, skirt, or pair of leg warmers. Take an empty jar, paste a picture of your choice item on the front, and start adding to the fund every week until you have saved enough to make your purchase.

- Try adding a new class to your routine. It might be taking a Pilates or yoga class at your local gym or studio, trying an 8-week ballroom dance class, or adding tap, modern, or jazz to your normal ballet schedule.

Musicality In Ballet Class Facilitates The Difficult Aspects of Dancing

I once had a teacher who described it as "technically dishonest" to use or feel the music in any way in order to perform a step better.

You mean we should have been able to train with someone just hitting a pencil on a pot lid to keep us working together? Or have a metronome clicking in the studio?

This same teacher made sure that her pianist played a battement tendu type of music for jumps - a little plonky, a little pedestrian (though there were pianists who, luckily, could not play without feeling). It seemed that inspiration was a way to cheat.

There are dancers who will catch your eye in class, even when they are not the best technical student, and are not among the most physically gifted ones. Their musicality is more than being on the music. Some people describe it as being "in" the music, or inside the music.

In performance, there is an element of phrasing. A soloist or principal dancer can adapt the timing of virtuoso sections in the ballet, to their individual technical highlights or qualities. Some dancers will work this out in rehearsal, and do it exactly the same every time.

And yet, in the less definable area of timing, there is poetry, there is a quality that isn't just good phrasing, that reaches a soulful level. The dancer, the music, the drama, the audience, are all in the same stream.

Such a quality does not require narrative drama to be visible, or tangible. It can occur in abstract choreography as well. It is not just that an experienced performer can "let go". Musicality can be apparent during ballet class when a performer or student is working hard.

Sometimes musicality can be invoked in students as they train. Movement imagery and mental tricks work. For example, giving an allegro exercise in a waltz, and saying "just stay in the air for two/three and land on 1" will bring out a better height and quality of jump. It will not be exactly staying in the air for two beats and landing on the first beat, but it will cause a dance student to reach for that timing and their work gains a quality.

Hearing the "and" between the beats of music is a technical necessity for petit allegro, for battus. But when there are several "ands" in between the beats - where do you choose to put the movement emphasis?

Musicality makes it easier. Of course practice makes it easier, but musicality makes it delicious for those watching, because some can feel what their eyes see and their ears hear, even without drama or emotion.

If you love watching ballet, you know what I mean. If you are extremely musical you may not know what I mean or why I would write about musicality in ballet class. You would ask "doesn't everyone do it like that?"

Short History of Jazz

Jazz is sometimes referred to as Americas classical music. It has become a diverse genre with its roots in native American and African music; in particular, the blues, spirituals and rag time. Jazz first became a defined music form in the early 1920 springing from the US cities of New Orleans and later Chicago. Early Jazz was characterized by traditional rhythms and melodies being taken and improvised upon, giving a combination of swing and syncopation. Early Jazz performers of note included Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong. A good taste of this period can be gained by listening to recordings of Louis Armstrongs Hot Fives and Hot Seven ensembles.

By the 1930 Jazz had spread out of its local bases in South American and became more mainstream attracting white musicians as well. One development of Jazz was the big bands such as Ben Goodman and Glen Miller. Glen Millers big band became very successful and popular, but offering little scope for improvisation jazz aficionados saw it as more of swing rather than real jazz. However other big bands such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie provided some of the all time great Jazz recordings.

Whilst the Big Band led jazz in a more conventional direction. The late 1930s and 1940s also saw jazz develop in another direction through the creation of the new Be Bop craze. Be Bop is epitomized by the great musicians such as Charlie Bird Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins. These musicians took Jazz to new heights of improvisation, loosening the adherence to harmonys and rigid chord structures.

Unlike previous forms of jazz, Be bop was not designed for dancing but was seen more like an opportunity to showcase the musical expertise of the performers. Some of the great be bop recordings came about as the performers played off each other, each striving for greater excellence and improvisation. One of the greatest recordings of this period was Jazz at Masey Hall 1953 featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker amongst others, it is a very good example of live jazz music. In the 1960s Be bop evolved into a form of free jazz with little if any adherence to conventional harmonies and chord structures. One of the best selling jazz recordings which characterized this new form was A Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.

Alas many of the great jazz performers led tragic lives, a seemingly very high percentage died prematurely, inevitably from drug and alcohol misuse. Unfortunately many young performers came to associate drugs with being a successful jazz performer so jazz developed a strong reputation for association with narcotics.

To play Jazz music successfully a classical background is definitely an advantage. To be a successful jazz player you need to be able to learn the chords and scales of the song. With this basic structure you can then improvise around these chords to give the improvised or jazz effect. However to be a great jazz musician a lot more is needed than formal training, successful improvisation is a difficult skill that appears to come easily to a rare few.

Jennifer Lopez Hit Single

Jennifer Lopez's latest dance hit was at number one this week on Billboards.com dance charts. The song, Do it Well, is part of her latest album, "Brave". "Brave" is Jennifer's 6th studio album in her music career, and her second release this year.

The song was written and produced by Ryan Teddler. David LaChepelle, who is renowned for his "out of the box" concepts and ideas, produced the music video. The video starts with Jennifer getting a SOS message from a little boy. Jennifer then pounds her way into a club, beats up a couple of random people and saves the boy. She manages to do all of this in a short trench coat and still has time for a few dance routines in between, which she does in a red dress and heels.

Although the song has been a big hit and has stayed on the Billboard.com charts for 6 weeks, the music video hasn't been as much of a success. In an interview, Jennifer tells of David's "magical work" by combining colour, art and an underground vibe into the video. She reports that David said, "People want to see her dance," so the video was created as a "high energy dance song."

Her previous album, released earlier this year, "Como Ama Un Mujer" has broken the record for the highest selling Spanish album. Since it's release in March, it has sold over 800,000 copies. The album has been nominated for the American Music Awards (AMA) in the category, Favourite Latin Artist.

This isn't her first time at the AMA. In 2003 she won the music award for Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist. But singing isn't the only thing that this multi-talented artist does. She still manages to fit in her acting career, song writing, clothing line and her fragrance: J-LO. According to Forbes, Jennifer Lopez is the richest Latin American in Hollywood.

This Latino Queen has taken Hollywood by storm since the beginning of her career in the 90s. She's managed to cover a variety of industries and combine them all into one. During her fame, she has been married several times, her latest husband being her long-time friend, Marc Anthony.

Currently they are on tour together, to promote her album. With two albums out in one year, awards piling up, a movie being planned and touring, it seems there is no stopping her. Who knows, she might be able to fit in a few more dance routines in a red dress and heels before the year is done.

Figure Skating - Facts About Inline Skating

The inline skates that are made specifically for the figure skaters are having a different design.

It has a stream-lined frame that boasts more control and less weight than regular inline skates. Also, its front stopper is similar to a toe pick. The boot is designed in such a way that it can bend and support at the same time. This allows the skater to make jumps and spins.

However, without these special skates, serious figure skaters should never cross train with inline skating. Roller blading should be done only when ice time is limited or unavailable.

However, make sure that the basic elements are practiced only on inline skates. Avoid roller blading as it can hinder an elite figure skaters progress.

Actually, the two edges on each ice skate blade have four sides that the expert skaters learn to use during the on-ice footwork. A wheel that could replace the concave steel blades will be highly advantageous.

Wheels require a different type of balance and maneuvering than the blade edges and therefore, students learning in-line skating are at a disadvantage.

A serious ice skater should never switch back and forth from ice skates to roller blades as this will slow down their progress in the development of balance and edge moves on ice.

Roller blading has adverse effects on ice skaters and therefore, off-ice skating should be limited for athletes as they progress to edge jumps, spins, and deep footwork.

But, that does not mean that figure skaters have no other cross-training options. For effective cross-training, figure skaters can try resistance training, plyometrics, pilates, dance, mountain biking, jogging and hiking.

Badminton, tennis, swimming, soccer and racquetball can also help the serious ice skaters to develop high level of fitness required for a good performance.

From Dance Floor to Recording Studio, the Debut Album by Julianne Hough

Two-time professional champion of ABC's hit television show "Dancing With The Stars," Julianne Hough has recently begun focusing on yet another talent - singing.

On May 20, Hough released her self-titled debut album of country music. In the spirit of something her most infamous critics Carrie Anne, Len and Bruno (the judges from the show that made her famous) might say, Hough's debut is very good but there is always some room for improvement.

The best track on the album is probably the first single, "That Song In My Head," which has all the qualities of a fun and catchy tune. Two other songs that really seem to stand out are "My Hallelujah Song" and "About Life" for their sweet vocals and notable themes respectively.

The majority of the tracks fall into what a typical music fan might consider the average to slightly above average category. But, the songs "You, You, You" and "Jimmy Ray McGee" are two examples works that seem either overdone or lacking originality and show the existence of the aforementioned "room for improvement".

Overall, Hough's is something of a breath of fresh air. In an industry that glorifies promiscuity and materialism, she is a complete change of pace. Her debut album gives the music world a refreshing taste of a wholesome and classic country style. And, if she keeps working at it, she could make quite a name for herself as a musician similar to how she has already done so with her skills on the dance floor.

I'd recommend this record to anyone who is more than just a casual country music fan with a passing interest.

The Weekend

Oh what a weekend; exasperating days, nights of debauched behaviour and drunken antics!
What it is to live by the seaside! As the visitors arrive looking for fun; they implode with excitement and go ever so, slightly mad!

As they escape from far-away, congested cities to the serene lands of tranquil countryside and beautiful golden beaches. Do they revel in these exquisite surroundings? No, their ebullience is reserved for the frequenting of bars and getting decidedly smashed!

They came, they consumed and became inebriated; they were narrow minded and very, very loud. The insecure, exhibitionist of questionable intelligence claimed to be of an 'international (of the club scene) pop singer' status; he was not able to go out much, due to the weekly social club appearances. So a weekend at the seaside turned into a very depraved affair. Unfortunately for us they were staying next door.

We heard all about his iconic eminence in club land, his popularity; his expertise; we chuckled at his constant need for reassurance, "I'm good aren't I?"; "I'm the best aren't I?" We heard all about his gym, his personal trainer 'Dan' and his belligerent pursuit to a fitter, better body; we heard all about how he has forsaken his beloved pint for vodka and Red Bull, because Dan had advised him that it has less calories!
We heard a lot!

We ventured into town for the pre-requisite pub crawl, they were indeed ready for action; loud and adulterated; they vied for attention; they mocked; they resounded; unabashed they were obstreperous and crude.
The 'international pop star' did not care for the locals (too scruffy!) or the band of musicians in our parochial pub; he criticised the singer's voice, the sound, the music. As he vociferates to all of his disdain for bands. "Too much noise!"

So we were forced to encroach on the tacky bright lights of the tourist's Mecca. To a sweaty, smoky milieu of thumping dance music and cheesy party tunes that filtrates the ears but not the soul. Sticky floors of spilt cheap lager cling to our feet and imprison in us in this empty, shallow place of drunken stag / hen parties, excited teenagers and the decamped weekenders.
Where gaggles of girls giggle and dance; evoking moods of silliness they wear costumes to attract, like peacocks their strut, displaying their tails. Intoxicated males stumble in clusters; clutching with addled impetuosity at any passing females; any piece of meat! A blow up doll surfs the crowd; floating gracefully like a feather above the herds of marauding stags. As they wrestle and jostle in their boozy camaraderie.

As we watch from the sidelines the 'international pop star' elicits his moves on the dance floor; thrusting his body to the music, drawing on his stage routine, sliding on his knee's ; provoking attention, high on adulation he basks in his glory.
Oh, how they were drunk on merriment and excessive alcohol; oh, how they laughed, danced, poked fun and rambled aimlessly.

When the night was called and we stumbled home in the wee hours laughing gleefully; with not a care in the world.
But how the mood can change so abruptly! When the liquor, drenched atmosphere can incense and inflame.
In the middle of the night; in the early hours of the morn, contentions ignited and an argument did rage; screaming, shouting, swearing, banging, for the whole neighbourhood to hear. We cringed in our beds, we struggled to sleep; we longed for the weekend to be over and the visitors to leave!

As quickly as they arrived, they departed, leaving a trail of carnage and bitterness in our hearts. Why travel so far to insensate the mind? Why dissipate the body in tacky bars and overpriced clubs? Call that a holiday, when they do the same at home? To live by the seaside, the party town; with it's summer haze of drunken revelry and boisterous larks. How we pine for the winter and a glorious, desolate town!

How to Break Your Running Rut

Running is one of the best routes towards losing weight and increasing fitness, not only this but it is absolutely free requiring no monthly gym membership. However, if you choose to run to lose weight or increase fitness, and not for enjoyment then you run the risk of becoming bored. Here are some tips for making your jog/run more interesting and keeping you focused.

Warming up before you run prepares you body for the exercise ahead, thus keeping the fatigue away for longer and decreasing the chance of you giving up too early. Try to change your warm up routine on a weekly or two weekly basis. Further to this if you are new to running then start off slow, exhorting yourself in the first five minutes will tired you out and drain you for the remainder of the run.

Listen to music, it will not only prevent boredom is but it will divert your attention from the sensations of fatigue. Keep the music on your MP3 player up to date and create different playlists to suit your different moods. Studies suggest that music can be stimulating so turn on upbeat dance music and try to synchronize your steps with the beats of the music, build up a rhythm to the music. When using a music player I would suggest using a holder for it, such as the arm band holders on the market at the moment,

Where you jog also has a big impact on your interest levels; if you have been jogging the same route for the past two years then get a map, have a look at all the nearby parks, points of interest or training grounds in the near vicinity and try them all out. Not everyone is affected by their route, but having new surroundings and terrain to cover can often make a run more interesting, and challenging. Don't always opt for the easiest route either, choosing a route which covers stairs or a hills something that although tiring will be very rewarding once you have mastered it; think of the scene in Rocky with the stone steps.

Whilst out, it is a good idea, to not only break your run up a bit but to also increase your performance, to set yourself goals; even if it is to sprint as fast as possible to the next tree or to improve upon your normal time. This will not only make your run a bit more interesting, it can lead to you improving your overall performance. If you find yourself very tired during your run, try to focus on different points on the horizon, focus on reaching them, once you have stop for a 20 second breather and find another spot and repeat the process.

If you often cut your run short due to fatigue or plain laziness then get a friend to jog with you. Having a running partner sharing the same goal will keep you both motivated, having someone to speak to will also help to distract you from your tiredness.

Taking "iPod Culture" into Clubs as Well as Cyberspace: Jonny Rocket Interviewed by The G-Man

Already making plenty of noise in the marketplace is a new concept called Playlist, which exists both as a club and as an online music competition (see www.ipod-dj.com for details on how to enter and what you can win).

Playlist is attracting attention for several reasons. First, as a part of what some are calling "iPod Culture," Playlist is helping disseminate music to a wide audience. And second, many of us just love the Warholian idea of a bunch of people showing up at a club to be a DJ for 15 minutes of fame.

So far, the Playlist club is only in London, but you can expect them to go global soon because this concept takes social networking and marries it to a party context. And who doesn't like a nice loud party?

Briefly, here's the rundown on the two forms of this new phenomenon:

BRICK-AND-MORTAR PLAYLIST.

You arrive with your favorite 15-minutes of music on an iPod or other digital music player, sign-up (first come, first served) and you play your songs through the club's sound system.

Or you sign up to be a judge of the quarter-hour sets. The best DJs win extra set time and prizes.

Or you just drop by the club and dance.

CYBERSPACE PLAYLIST.

Anyone can register at the Web site and send a 15-minute playlist for judging. Again, there are prizes for the best set. Playlist does not yet feature streaming, downloading or Internet radio broadcasts, but you can bet that these are coming soon.

A BEHIND-THE-SCENES CHAT.

I spoke with Playlist's co-creator, Jonny "Rocket" Evans, who is excited by the unpredictability of his new venture. "What will happen at Playlist? That's just it. We don't know what will happen." Evans is happy to let the audience take control. "We can't say what the music will be, except that it will be diverse. We think it'll appeal to people with broad musical taste, a sense of humor and the desire to have fun. We also think we'll attract artists and musicians, who will want to explore the creative potential of the whole idea."

Evans sees the Playlist concept as inevitable. "I think music is about to enter a new boom time. It's going to be very interesting, because digital downloads (legal and peer-to-peer) have reinvigorated interest in music, and I think the most recent US album sales and downloads figures from SoundScan show this. This also encourages a sense of diversity in the music-loving audience. We think this is going to mean people want the unexpected. And this is why we think the Playlist idea is an idea that reflects its time."

The current consolidation of major media across the globe is somewhat counter-balanced by the Playlist concept. As Evans notes, "In the case of radio, for example, commercial radio playlists are designed to appeal to a particular demographic, which musician and music tsar Feargal Sharkey describes as 'Teenage girls,' as this group statistically buys the most music. And that's not good for music. We think we live at a point in time when digital diversity will propel music sales beyond anything ever seen before. And we really, really like the idea of harnessing a personal technology such as the iPod in a way that transforms it into a collective, social activity such as Playlist."

CHANGING TIMES.

There is a philosophical element in the way Evans describes the culture surrounding Playlist. "Music is at once a deeply personal activity and a deeply social activity, both for players and listeners. I think music is tribal glue. And it's a truism, isn't it, that whenever music marries new technology it sees economic benefit that is good for companies, artists and all involved in the entertainment ecosystem," he states, pointing to the sales figures of firms involved in sheet music, juke boxes, 33rpm vinyl, and clubs, not to mention CDs.

"Playlist is all about the music, not the genre," Evans says. As their manifesto states: "The principle is simple: if you want to share your music, just turn up, sign in and play out. If you want to judge other people's music, turn up, sign up and speak out. If you simply want to party, just turn up, tune in, dance it out."

In the planning stages for months, Playlist is now launching down the block and in cyberspace near you. Everyone can participate, and everyone can be a DJ, at least fifteen minutes at a time.

American Idol - David Cook Finally Takes the Title

Learn Piano Fast - Even if You Don't Know Where Middle C is!

So, you want to learn how to play piano. So do thousands of others around the world. Here's how they usually go about it.

First, they try to find a piano teacher close to where they live. They may or may not know what style they want to learn, but figure the piano teacher can help them figure this out.

Next, it's off to the piano teacher for the first appointment. What usually happens here is the teacher gives the student "an assessment" to see what they know. Now, for the most part, piano teachers won't ask prospective students what they want to learn because they assume it will be classical in nature.

The benefits for the piano teacher in teaching the classical method are enormous! First, students must learn how to read music and this can take anywhere from 1-month to 1 year depending on how fast a learner the student is. Second, students learn classical repertoire and this can literally take forever. As this is happening over time, the student becomes a piano player who can read sheet music and play the music of dead composers reasonably well. That's the goal anyway.

The student at this point may have spent thousands of dollars learning how to do this thus increasing the piano teachers income. What a great deal for the piano teacher! But what about the student?

Listen, if your goal is to learn how to note-read and play other peoples music for fun then that is what you should do. But if you're interested in a more creative approach to piano playing, you may want to seek out a teacher who will show you how to play piano using a chord-based approach. Here's why:

  1. Time spent learning is greatly reduced. Listen to this... you can learn most chords on the piano within one month's time. You won't be an expert at it, but you'll know enough to get around on the piano. This puts you light years ahead of your classical playing counterparts.
  2. Musicianship is quickly realized. Do you know that most classical players don't have a clue how what they are playing was created? That's right! They just play the notes like a typist and never understand the mystery behind the music. Now, if you learn chords, inevitably, you're going to learn about chord charts and once you learn how to "chart out music," you'll be thinking like a composer. You'll be quantum leaps ahead of most classically trained musicians.
Look, if you really want to learn how to play piano fast, learn a chord-based approach first. You can always learn note reading later on.
