Ukulele is a great instrument to use when you play chords to songs. Your chord playing on your ukulele can be more effective if you apply a few guitar playing principles. In this ukulele lesson you will find out how you can change between chords better and easier!

First a few easy to follow principles as you play any chord:

1. Fingerings. The left hand fingers you use as you play chords can make chord changes easier or harder.

2. Minimize finger movements. Try to take the shortest distance between two frets if you have to move a finger to change chords.

3. Keep fingers down on frets that are shared between two chords.

Let us take a closer look at these principles:

Fingerings

As an example of the first principle we will take a look at two common ukulele chords. We will use the common C-tuning. In this tuning the C-major chord will look like this:

C-major: 04 03 02 31

The number pairs tell you how to put your fingers to play the chord. The first number in the pair tells you which fret to press down and the next number which string to play. The number 0 means that you will not press down any fret. For example 04 means play the fourth open string. The number pair 31 tells you to press down the third fret on the first string.

The strings are numbered from the string with the highest pitch. This string is called the first string and is the bottom string when you play your ukulele.

In the C-major chord written out above you can see that there is only one fret to press down. This makes for many fingering alternatives. The easiest way to finger this C-chord is of course to use your index finger. But let us look at the next chord to play, G7, to see if there is another way to finger the C-chord. Here is the G7 chord:

G7: 04 23 12 21

The most common fingering for this chord is using the ring finger for the first string, the index finger for the second string and the middle finger for the third string. Try it out and see if it is this way you have played it.

A common chord progression is to move from C-major to G7. In order to make this chord change as smooth as possible I suggest that you use your ring finger to play the third fret on the first string in the C-major chord. When you move to G7 you simply slide your ring finger to the second fret and add the remaining two fingers and you have the G7 chord.

If you are going from G7 to C you only have to reverse the procedure.

Minimize finger movements

As an example of this principle we will use the chords A-minor and and F-major. Here you have these chords written out:

A-minor: 24 03 02 01

F-minor: 24 03 12 01

Suppose you have to move from Am to F. As you can see there is only one change to make between Am and F. The only thing to do is to put your index finger on the first fret on the second string and you will have the F chord. To make this chord change as smooth as possible you can keep your index finger as close as possible to this fret even when you play Am. This principle applies to other chord changes as well.

Keep fingers down on frets that are shared

In order to illustrate this principle we will use the chords F-major and G7. I have already showed the chords above so I just have to describe how to move your fingers. If you take a look at the two chords you will find that the first fret second string is shared by both chords. This fret is pressed down with your index finger.

As you move from F to G7 you only have to move your middle finger from fret two on the fourth string to fret two on the third string and press down fret two on string one with your ring finger and you are done!

Using the chords and principles we have already discussed you can practice the following sequence that is very common in many songs:

C Am F G7 C Am ...and so on.

How to practice

The best way to practice chord changes in a song is to take two consecutive chords and practice them by strumming once on every chord as you move between them. Slowly at first, making it possible to apply the principles we have discussed. In a short time you will find that you automatically will use the right fingerings, minimize finger movements and you will also find that your playing will be more effective and enjoyable!

Many of our baby names come from the gods and goddesses of the ancient Romans and Greeks. For example, Iris was the goddess of the rainbow, Martin comes from Mars, the god of war. And Flora was the goddess of flowers.

Some baby names come from place names of the gods. Cynthia, for instance, comes from "Kynthos," the mountain birthplace of Artemis, goddess of the hunt and her twin, Apollo, god of wild animals.

Gods and goddesses were titans, sea nymphs, tree spirits and other immortals. They roamed the earth and sped across the sky in chariots. They loved and they fought - just like humans.

Let is look at a few of these baby names.

God Baby Boy Names

Achilles (Greek) means "Destroyer. Achilles was the hero of the Trojan War. His motherm a sea nymph, tried to make him immortal by bathing him in the River Styx. She missed one heel, however, and he was slain by an arrow through that heel. Famous bearers of this name is the Emperor Achilleus, 3rd Century AD ruler of Egypt. Also, actor Achilles Bombanassa.

Adonis (Greek) meaning "Lord." Adonis was a handsome mortal youth when Aphrodite, goddess of love, fell in love with him. When Adonis was killed by a wild boar, his body was given to Aphrodite. A famous bearer is actor Adonis Kapsalis.

Hercules (Greek from "Herkles.") Hercules was the son of Jupiter, the king of gods. He was strong and was well-known for performing 12 mighty labors. Famous bearers include Agatha Christy's detective, Hercule Poirot.

Orion (Greek) meaning "Light." Orion was a hunter who fell in love with Diana, goddess of the moon. When he was killed hunting, Diana carried him to Heaven and turned him into the constellation Orion. Famous Orions are actors Orion Clemens and Orion Barnes.

Damon (Greek) meaning "One who Tames." According to Greek legend, Damon was so faithful to his friend Pythias, that he prepared to lay down his life for him - and was saved at the last moment. Famous Damons include author Damon Runyon and actors Matt Damon and Damon Andrews.

Goddess Baby Girl Names

Aurora (Latin) The Goddess of the Dawn. Aurora gives her name to the rainbow of lights in the night sky known as Aurora Borealis. Famous Auroras include author Aurora Dupin (Georges Sand) and poet, Aurora Cornu.

Diana (Latin) Goddess of the Moon and of the Hunt. The name became popular in the second half of the 20th Century. Famous Dianas include Diana, Princess of Wales and the actress Diane Keaton.

Daphne (Greek) meaning "Laurel Tree." Daphne was a nymph who caught the eye of Apollo. To escape his advances, she turned into a laurel tree. Apollo was so sad, he wore her branches around his head as his symbol. Famous Daphnes include author Daphne du Maurier and actress Daphne Zuniga.

Minerva (Latin) meaning "Mind." The Goddess of Wisdom and of War. This name was popular in the 19th Century but is rare today. Famous bearers are Minerva McGonagall of "Harry Potter" and the actress Minerva Urecal.

June (Latin) This name comes from the goddess Juno, Goddess of the Family and Guardian of Women. Famous Junes include actresses June Allyson and June MacCloy.

We have just seen some of the most powerful and beautiful baby boy names and baby girl names from the gods and goddess of ancient Rome and Greece. Perhaps you found your own name among them.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head INTERVIEW

This CD contains 85 speech cuts, featuring all four members of Coldplay. The interview was conducted in London on May 24th 2002 by Danny O'Connor.

For all the ubiquity of post-punk inspired bands flooding the mainstream over recent years, the amount of truly innovative music they have collectively produced has been disappointing by comparison. It's not difficult to see why; the original class of 78-82 set the bar high and bequeathed one of the most astonishingly imaginative musical legacies ever - a lavish cross-pollination that embraced punk, disco, dub reggae, funk, glam and krautrock to often dizzying extremes. And while some of these acts (Talking Heads, Wire) have become touchstones for a generation of indie kids, other key players (Associates, Magazine) have proved simply too rich to rob - talents so 'out there' as to defy influence.

It's a willingness to experiment, both musically and technologically, that's been missing of late. All the aforementioned artists broke new ground in the studio and, in their own ways, redefined what the pop single could be - mental but magnificent, yet still within detection of the Smash Hits radar. Certainly, the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Maximo Park have produced top-notch material in recent years but, worryingly, little new ground has been broken and the 30-year-old model remains the blueprint.

Thank flip, then, for Foals and their wonderful new album, Antidotes. Ostensibly, given their youth, NME-darling status and oft-mentioned Skins appearance, it would be easy to dismiss this Oxford bunch as yet more spiky-guitar-driven, jerky vocal, Gang of Four wannabes. Not so. Foals have ambition by the truckload and, while their influences are clearly apparent, they've applied them in new and unpredictable ways. And finally, thrillingly, over a decade after Oasis single-handedly kicked the cack out of musical progression, here's a guitar band that's clearly in love with the studio, electronics and the notion of stretching possibility.

The singles Cassius and Balloons are perfectly formed pop confections that, like with all the best albums, only scratch the surface of the whole. African-influenced guitars abound but it's the concise drive and restrained neurosis that strikes, as well as the arresting use of saxophone (think Mirror In The Bathroom rather than Baker Street). The album's true heart lies deeper, however, and the tension is released throughout Antidotes at several key moments, so when everyone stops to admire the beautiful view they've created, - the heart-rending chorus of Red Sock Pugie; the gentle ascent of Big, Big Love (vaguely reminiscent of Unforgettable Fire-era U2) - it's exhilarating.

At last, the noughties have their own Fear of Music, Chairs Missing or Fourth Drawer Down - a record driven by an impulse to create something new, where musical dexterity is of secondary importance to the idea, but still retaining one foot on the dance floor. Yes, that good.

Parachutes (VINYL)

Everywhere I go there seems to be some sophisticated discussion or debate about what's wrong with the music industry and what needs to be done to fix it. The conversation takes place in offices among professionals who have been around long enough to know that things are indeed different, and at industry conferences among music artists who revel in new found optimism that infrastructure changes and the arrival of the new digital/mobile entertainment era will "level" the playing field and create more income opportunities.

As tempting as it may be, I am not enamored with or preoccupied by the current problems that face the music industry. Issues such as declining record sales; the consolidation of radio stations; the constant merging of record labels; the lack of longevity in the "careers" of music artists; declining CD sales; or any myriad of issues regarding the illegal downloading of music on the Internet. Why? Because while so many in the music industry (professionals and artists alike) spend countless hours lamenting over things that they can't control, I only focus on the things that are within my control such as my professional pursuits, income generating activities, and investing in profitable relationships.

Most importantly, my business model is based on my passions because while I know that the economy will always fluctuate up or down, and industry trends will turn hot and cold in the blink of an eye, my love for what I do is a constant and remains unaffected.

In 1999 I had the pleasure of meeting and briefly talking to Barry White at a party for the release of "Love Unlimited," his semi-autobiographical book on his adventures in life, love and the music
industry. When he asked me what I did for a living, I told him I was a music industry consultant. Barry, who was much darker in person than he is on television and in his videos, flashed some of the whitest teeth you could ever imagine and said, "I don't know what that is, but as long as you believe in what you do, that's all that counts."

I went on to enthusiastically explain to him what I did as a music business consultant, asking him for advice and hogging up his limited time in the process. He stopped me before I could really dive deep into it and interjected in his sincere, rich baritone voice, the advice that I still follow to this very day, "Constantly re-commit yourself to what you do and the money will follow..."

We all need to re-commit from time to time. We all lose sight of what we actually do for a living and the reasons why we do it, but the long roots of true passion run deep...and even when the tree is cut down by unfair business practices, a gluttony of superficial encounters, busted deals, a never ending parade of fakes and flakes, unpredictable and unforseen circumstances, technological changes, and rampant un-professionalism that plagues the industry, you endure because you know that at the end of the day you are truly passionate about what you do and it all becomes a mere occupational hazard that you learn how to deal with.

While many aspiring industry professionals have fashionably set their sights on the greener pastures of the music business, prostituting their values for the sake and pursuit of money, the vast majority will not obtain the riches they so desperately seek, nor will they be in it for the long haul. Why? Because they lack vision, focus, commitment, and above all else, true passion for what they do - which brings us to the question: what's love got to do with it? When it comes to art, you would think everything, but the sad truth is that there are many in the music industry that are more passionate about self-serving interests, than they are about music as an art form (unless, of course, the music we are speaking of is their own).

And what about all the "changes" that people are talking about so adamantly? History shows that this industry is always changing. The industry never stops changing; technologically; structurally; logistically; and creatively. Adaptability is a requirement of success in every industry because change. The music industry was predicated on change and entrepreneurship.

Can we deny the entrepreneurial spirit of Apple and their convictive belief in iTunes? Or the unyielding belief that the creators of American Idol have in their little "talent" show? I can't, nor can you, because
that's what happens when you are passionate about your business ideas: they become business opportunities.

So for those who are distracted by the changes that are taking place in the industry, my free, but valuable advice to all of you is to focus on what you love to do. Your passion is the intangible that will increase the value of your product or service. Your business needs and opportunities will announce themselves at the appropriate time. Until then, rekindle your love affair with your business or art, because in the end, love has everything to do with the reason you do it in the
first place.

2008 reissue housed in a deluxe cardboard slipcase. This single disc anthology brings the legendary guitarist's best recordings of his Arista Records era together with his greatest classics from the Columbia Records years on a single compact disc. Among the 18 tracks are the chart toppers 'Smooth', 'Maria Maria', 'Black Magic Woman', 'The Game Of Love' (with both Michelle Branch and Tina Turner), 'Oye Como Va' and many more. Sony/BMG.
Customer Review: big mistake
YUK! I just recently started downloading mp3s and really screwed up when I bought this thinking it would be the Carlos Santana music I knew in the 60s. What else would "Ulitmate Santana" mean? Instead most of the album is just Santana accompanying some bozo singing stupid disco type songs. My bad. Remember, when it says "featuring so-and-so" it usually means you better like so-and-so and not care too much about who the titled performer is.
Customer Review: Great songs, but...
Carlos Santana has very few bad albums, or even bad songs. (Stay away from his collaboration with John McLaughlin though.) If you're looking for a one-disk compilation and are familiar with his later songs plus his late 60's hits, the songs here will be familiar. But... try Caravanserai, Borboletta, or some of his other unbelievable albums from "in between". If this is all you know of Carlos Santana, you have a lot to discover! What you hear on this disk is just an introduction. I give this review 4 stars rather than 5 not because there are bad songs on this CD (there aren't), but because you, as a Santana listener, deserve more.
